DonutSMP Shards System Guide — Earn, Spend, Strategize

Shards are DonutSMP's secondary currency. You can't trade them between players or buy them with coins — you have to earn them through gameplay. Here's everything to know.

How to earn shards

Two methods:

1. AFK at /spawn — 1 shard per minute while in the designated AFK area. 60 min = 60 shards. 24h overnight AFK = ~1,440 shards.

2. PvP kills — 10 shards per player kill. Faster if you're skilled.

Practical strategy: most players combine — AFK overnight + occasional PvP during play sessions.

What shards are for

Three main uses:

1. Spawners — 1,500 shards each at the in-game shard shop. After the April 2026 flatten, ALL spawner types cost the same flat 1,500. This is the major use.

2. Crate keys — Some keys cost shards (varies by event).

3. Cosmetic items — Particle effects, prefix unlocks (varies).

Optimal shard strategy

For passive grinders:

• AFK overnight every night
• Vote daily for occasional bonus shards
• 25-30 hours of total AFK time = 1 spawner

For active players:

• PvP during play sessions
• AFK between sessions
• Mix → 1 spawner per 1-2 weeks of regular play

For impatient players:

• Buy spawners directly from Donut Depot at $0.49-$3.99 each
• Saves 25+ hours per spawner

Don't waste shards on

• Cosmetic-only items unless you really want them
• Random crates — most have negative expected value crate ROI →
• One-off keys with unknown loot tables

Stack multiple spawners faster

If you want 5 spawners (a full income setup):

• Grind: 125+ hours of AFK
• Buy: $2.45 from Donut Depot (skeleton x5)
• Mixed: 25 hours of AFK + 4 bought spawners

The math heavily favors purchase if your time is worth more than $0.10/hour.

Can I trade shards with other players? No — shards are bound to your account.

Can I sell shards for coins? Not directly. Convert via spawners → drops → coins.

Do I earn shards from kills in PvP zones only? Yes — kills in safe zones don't count.

Does AFK time count if I'm offline? No — you need to be online (alts running 24/7 is the common workaround).

Can I buy shards somewhere? Not from official sources. Some third-party sellers claim to sell shards but they're usually selling pre-bought spawners instead.
