Beacons give buffs over a wide area on DonutSMP. They look cool. But are they worth the massive setup cost? Here's the honest analysis.

What beacons do

A beacon provides 1 or 2 buffs to all players within range:

Speed I or II (run faster)
Haste I or II (mine/break faster)
Resistance I or II (damage reduction)
Jump Boost I or II
Strength I or II (deal more damage)
Regeneration (heal over time, level 1 only)

The level and number of buffs depend on the beacon's "pyramid" size:

1-tier pyramid (9 blocks): 1 buff at level 1
2-tier (34 blocks): 1 buff at level 1
3-tier (83 blocks): 2 buffs at level 1
4-tier (164 blocks): 2 buffs, can upgrade to level 2

The setup cost

Beacon block itself: 1 Nether Star + 3 Obsidian + 5 Glass

Nether Star cost: ~5-10M coins on /order, OR kill the Wither yourself (3 Wither Skulls + 4 Soul Sand). Skulls = ~525k coins each → 1.5M for the skulls plus dirt-cheap soul sand.

Effective beacon cost: ~5-10M coins for the beacon block.

Is it worth it?

For a serious DonutSMP base: probably yes if you have 50M+ in spare coins. The buffs are real:

Haste II — 2x mining speed (huge for ancient debris mining)
Speed II — 40% movement speed boost (covers more ground while exploring)
Strength II — 2x melee damage in PvE

For PvP: limited (beacons work in safe zones, not PvP zones for combat buffs).

For decoration / flex: also yes if you have 100M+ disposable.

When NOT to bother

Optimal beacon placement strategy

For mining base: Haste II beacon over your AFK mining setup. 2x mining speed = real income boost.

For exploration base: Speed II beacon as you depart. Buff lasts 30 seconds in range, gets you off to a fast start.

For combat training: Strength II beacon in your duel arena (safe zone). Practice with PvE damage boost.

ROI analysis

A beacon doesn't directly earn coins. Its value is time savings:

Haste II mining beacon: 2x faster mining = halved time for ancient debris runs. Worth ~$5-15/month in time saved at scale.
Speed II travel beacon: minimal income impact unless you're constantly running between bases.

For most players, the beacon is a "I've made it" status item rather than an income engine.
