Villager trading on DonutSMP is the cheapest way to get Mending books, premium enchants, and emerald-tier loot. Here's the complete guide.

What villager trading gets you

  • Mending books (the most valuable enchant for all your gear)
  • Other tier-1 enchants (Unbreaking III, Sharpness V, Protection IV)
  • Emeralds (universal currency in trade chains)
  • Bottles o' Enchanting (XP)
  • Food, blocks, raw materials

The killer trade is Mending books. They cost emeralds (or items) from a Librarian villager — way cheaper than crafting/finding Mending elsewhere.

How to start trading

  1. Find a village — natural villages spawn near plains, deserts, savannas
  2. Cure infected villagers for cheap trades (60-80% discount when you cure)
  3. Trap villagers with workstations to lock them as Librarians, Farmers, etc.

Finding a Mending Librarian

The dream trade: a Librarian villager who sells Mending books for 1 emerald + 1 book.

Process:

  1. Place a Lectern next to a villager (they become Librarian)
  2. Check their first 3 trades for Mending
  3. If no Mending, break Lectern and re-place to reroll their trades
  4. Repeat until you find one with Mending
  5. Lock that villager (block them with iron bars + workstation)

Realistic time to find one: 30-90 minutes of rerolling.

Other best Librarian trades

  • Unbreaking III — 5 emeralds + 1 book (uncommon trade)
  • Protection IV — 12 emeralds + 1 book (rare)
  • Sharpness IV — 9 emeralds + 1 book (rare)
  • Looting III — 15 emeralds + 1 book (rare)

For all of these: reroll until you find them.

Emerald sources

Best emerald farms:

  1. Farmer villager trades — sell wheat/carrots/potatoes for emeralds
  2. Fisherman trades — sell raw cod for emeralds
  3. Cleric trades — sell rotten flesh for emeralds (from zombie spawner farms)
  4. Cartographer trades — sell glass panes for emeralds

Best ROI: zombie spawner → tons of rotten flesh → trade to Cleric for emeralds → trade to Librarian for Mending.

The trading hall setup

A "trading hall" is a centralized facility with multiple villager workstations:

  1. Build 12-20 cells, each with:
    • 1 villager
    • 1 specific workstation (Lectern, Composter, etc.)
    • 1 trade window (slit in wall) for player interaction
  2. Lock each villager into their cell
  3. Trade with the right one based on what you need

Total build cost: 50-100M coins. Time savings over the next year: 100M+.

Common villager trading mistakes

  • Killing villagers accidentally — they're fragile, watch out for sword swings
  • Letting zombies spawn in your trading hall — they kill all your villagers in one night
  • Not rerolling enough — Mending takes patience, 50+ rerolls is normal
  • Trading non-renewables — never trade away your only one of something

The shortcut

If you don't want to deal with villager trading:

  • Buy enchanted books on /ah (50k-500k coins each)
  • Buy coins from Donut Depot to fund the purchases
  • $10 = 100M = ~20 enchanted books worth

For most players: villager trading is worth the time investment because it scales (one trading hall serves you for years).

Frequently Asked

Can villagers despawn? Only if you let them stand in light at night (no bed) or if zombies kill them.

Can I move villagers to a trading hall? Yes — use minecarts. Push a villager into a minecart, rail it to the trading hall.

Best villager profession for emeralds? Farmer (wheat/carrots trade) — easy bulk emeralds if you have a farm.

Can I trade with player villagers? No, only with NPCs.
