Most DonutSMP players use /sell because it's instant. Smart players use /order because it pays 20-50% more. Here's when to use which.

How they differ

/sell — The NPC shop. Fixed prices set by the server. Instant transaction. Has daily caps per item.

/order — Player-to-player buy/sell orders. Prices set by demand (variable). Slower (you wait for buyers). No daily caps.

Price comparison (common items)

Item /sell price /order price Spread
Bones 100 170 +70%
Bone Blocks 450 525 +17%
Iron Ingot 50 75 +50%
Gold Ingot 80 110 +37%
Diamond 1000 1300 +30%
Netherite Scrap 50k 70k +40%
Bamboo 12 18 +50%
Dried Kelp Block 800 1100 +37%

Real spread: typically 20-50% higher on /order than /sell.

When to use /sell

  • ✅ Small quantities (under 1 stack) — listing fee on /order isn't worth it
  • ✅ You need cash NOW (no time to wait for buyers)
  • ✅ You hit the per-item daily cap (rare items have lower caps)
  • ✅ Items not commonly bought via /order

When to use /order

  • ✅ Large quantities (1+ stack)
  • ✅ Items with steady demand (bones, iron, blocks)
  • ✅ You can wait minutes to hours for fills
  • ✅ Premium materials (netherite, ender pearls, blaze rods)

How to use /order efficiently

To list a sell order:

  1. /order sell <item> <price>
  2. Wait for buyer to take it
  3. Coins arrive in your balance

To place a buy order:

  1. /order buy <item> <price>
  2. Wait for seller to fill
  3. Items arrive in your inventory

Pro strategies

Strategy 1: List at -2% below current market. If bones are at 170 on /order, list yours at 168. Yours fills first.

Strategy 2: Watch the spread. Check both /sell and /order before listing. If spread > 50%, list on /order. If <20%, /sell is faster for small inventory.

Strategy 3: Bulk batching. Save items until you have 5+ stacks, then list one big /order. Reduces listing time per unit.

Strategy 4: Multi-account listing. With alts, you can have multiple buy/sell orders at different price points to capture more deal flow.

Common mistakes

  • Listing rare items on /sell for 50% less than they're worth on /order
  • Not checking current /order prices before listing — undercutting yourself
  • Listing tiny quantities on /order — listing fees + time cost > value
  • Forgetting to claim filled orders — pickup the coins/items, otherwise they expire

What about /ah (auction house)?

Different system. /ah is for one-off rare items (Elytras, special enchanted gear). /order is for bulk fungible items (bones, blocks, ingots).

Don't list 5,000 bones on /ah — use /order. Don't list a unique enchanted sword on /order — use /ah.

Frequently Asked

Are there fees on /order? Small listing fee (usually 1-2% of order value) returned when filled, lost when canceled.

How long does /order take to fill? Common items (bones, iron): minutes. Rare items: hours to days.

Can I cancel a /order listing? Yes — /order cancel <id>. Listing fee is lost.

What if no one fills my /order? After listing expires (usually 7 days), items return to your inventory. List again at lower price next time.
