If you mine for income on DonutSMP, your pickaxe is your most important tool. The right enchant combo doubles or triples your yield per hour.
The Fortune vs Silk Touch decision
Most players need BOTH (separate picks). They serve different purposes:

The "main pickaxe" loadout
For 99% of mining sessions, run:
- Efficiency V
- Fortune III
- Unbreaking III
- Mending
This is your daily driver. Don't waste levels on Silk Touch on the same pick.
Secondary "silk pick" loadout
For silk-only ores (ice, glass, mob spawners* — *spawners don't actually silk-touch in vanilla but mining quartz/clean glass is silk-only):
- Silk Touch
- Efficiency V
- Unbreaking III
- Mending
Efficiency V tricks
- Iron pickaxe with Eff V breaks stone instantly
- Netherite + Eff V + Haste II = mining basalt at 8 blocks/sec
- Eff V is REQUIRED for any AFK Nether mining tunnel system
The Haste II beacon stack
Top miners run a beacon with Haste II near their mining tunnel. Combined with Eff V, breaking speed approaches Creative-mode pace.
Mending math
Without Mending: each ~3-hour mining session costs ~5k coins in repairs / xp bottles. With Mending: you mine forever. Mining gives plenty of XP from ores.
The break-even: Mending pays for itself within 6 hours of mining vs anvil repair costs.
Ancient Debris specific notes
- Fortune does NOT work on Ancient Debris
- Use Efficiency V Netherite pickaxe for speed
- Bed mining doesn't care about pickaxe enchant (explosion does damage)
- For non-bed mining: prioritize Efficiency V over everything else

- ❌ Putting Silk Touch on a Fortune pickaxe (they're mutually exclusive)
- ❌ Skipping Mending (repair costs add up FAST)

- ❌ Diamond pick when Netherite is the same enchants at 5× durability

Can I combine Fortune + Silk Touch? No. The enchantments conflict — you can only have one.
Which is more profitable? Fortune for active mining (diamonds + emeralds 3×). Silk Touch for ore storage / displays.
Best biome to mine? Y=15 for diamonds, Y=11 for ancient debris in Nether, Y=80 for emeralds (in mountain biomes only).
